4 Important Steps if Your Dental Filling Pops Out

Posted on 4/30/2016 by Dr. Jay
A man covering his mouth and looking shocked, because he's lost a dental filling! It has happened to many of us - you are snacking on your favorite treat, when all of the sudden something pops loose in the back of your mouth.

After checking out the damage, you realize that your filling has actually popped out of its place. What should you do? Is this a dental emergency?

Find the Dental Filling

When your filling pops out of place, your first step should be to try and find it. While it isn't a big deal if you swallow it, you'll want to ensure that you don't accidentally breathe it in.

Assess the Damage
Depending on the health of the tooth, you may need to perform some first aid once your filling falls out. If the displaced filling has exposed a nerve, your tooth could become extremely painful and sensitive.

Try to cover up the exposed area with over-the-counter dental filling materials or a piece of sugar free gum. You can also take Tylenol or a similar pain medication until you can see your dentist.

Keep the Area Clean
While waiting to see your dentist, it is important to try and keep the affected tooth clean. Brush it gently to remove debris and rinse out your mouth with a warm salt water solution. This will help to keep bacteria free of the hole.

Visit the Dentist

The long-term health of your tooth requires that you visit your dentist to have the problem corrected. In many cases, the filling can simply be replaced in order to correct the problem. However, if the tooth has suffered further decay or was damaged when the filling came out, you may need additional treatment.

If you have fillings, make sure to contact our office periodically in order to have your teeth checked. Your dentist can ensure that your fillings are holding up and don't need to be replaced so that you can avoid dental emergencies like this in the future.
