4 Non-Dairy Calcium Sources for Stronger Teeth

Posted on 7/30/2016 by Dr. Jay
A salmon fillet covered with a lime garnish. You've probably heard that dairy products are great for maintaining strong and healthy teeth because they are high in calcium. However, what should you do if you are lactose intolerant?

What about if you simply don't like dairy products or follow a vegan diet? Fortunately, there are several other good sources of calcium out there.

It may sound strange, but salmon is actually quite high in calcium, making it a great addition to any tooth-friendly diet. Not only that, but it will support your brain function, the nervous system, heart health, and might even prevent certain eye diseases. Salmon and other similar types of fish are also high in omega 3 fatty acids, which can further support teeth and gum health.

Figs are a delicious way to get healthier teeth, as many people believe that these sweet fruits taste like candy. In addition to being high in calcium, they are also loaded with vitamins, minerals, and fiber, making them a healthy addition to any diet. Keep a bag of figs in your office desk to have a sweet, tooth-friendly snack at any time of the day.

Collard Greens
This southern food is a great side dish if you are hoping to eat healthy and boost the strength of your teeth. Many people prepare them with garlic and olive oil before lightly sautéing them. Kale and bok choy are good alternatives if you simply aren't a fan of collard greens.

While this green vegetable might not be your kids' favorite, it is certainly high in calcium. In fact, there are about 86 milligrams in two cups of raw broccoli. By adding this veggie to your diet, you'll enjoy other benefits like improved digestion and immune system function.
